Products for sex drive – what really works?

One of the most common questions we get – from both younger and older women – is if there is a product that can increase sex drive. The answer is both simple and complex: no, there is no miracle cure. But there is much you can do to give desire the best possible conditions – with or without a partner

YOUR DESIRE IS YOURS – WHETHER YOU HAVE A PARTNER OR NOT

Desire is not just something that "should" arise in a relationship. Exploring and awakening your own desire, even without a partner, is part of sexual health and well-being. Masturbation, fantasies, touch, and new ways to stimulate the body can build a closer relationship with yourself and make desire present when you want to share it with someone else.

Giving yourself permission to enjoy – for your own sake – is often what starts a positive spiral where both the body and brain begin to cooperate to increase desire

LUBRICANT – MORE THAN JUST COMFORT

Lubricant is a fantastic invention. It is not only a way to relieve dryness – research shows that lubricant actually increases sexual pleasure and satisfaction even in women who do not have problems with dryness. By reducing friction and increasing the feeling of comfort, lubricant can make both arousal and desire increase.

VagiVital Active Glide is a pH-balanced lubricant developed for women, which provides intense moisturizing and works just as well during sex with a partner as during solo activities.

WHY ARE THERE POTENCY DRUGS FOR MEN BUT NOT FOR WOMEN?

When it comes to sexual function, there are today several approved drugs for men that increase blood flow to the penis and make it easier to get an erection. They thus treat a physical function (the erection), not desire itself.

For women, the situation is more complex. Women's sexuality is not governed by a single physical function but is an interaction between body, hormones, feelings, relationships, and psychological factors. Therefore, there is no “female potency drug” that works in the same way.

There have been attempts in the form of drugs that affect neurotransmitters in the brain, but the effect is often modest and the side effects relatively common. Therefore, these are not widely used, and they are not approved in Sweden.

However, this does not mean that research stands still. But for now, the most effective “desire enhancers” for women are about removing obstacles such as pain and dryness, improving well-being and if needed use medical treatments such as testosterone for selected groups.

VagiVitalAktivGel moisturizes and treats dry mucous membranes with clinically proven effect, completely without hormones – and can be used both for menopausal symptoms and other causes of dryness.

HSDD – PERSISTENT LOW DESIRE

HSDD stands for hypoactive sexual desire disorder and is a medical diagnosis meaning that a person has had low or absent sexual desire for a long time – and that this causes significant suffering or negatively affects relationships.

It is therefore not about shorter periods of decreased desire, which are completely normal, but about a persistent situation where desire is almost completely absent and where the person themselves experiences it as a problem. The diagnosis is made after conversation and investigation by healthcare professionals, where other causes such as depression, stress, pain or medication side effects that can be treated in other ways.

MEDICAL ALTERNATIVES – WHAT DOES THE RESEARCH SAY?

For postmenopausal women with diagnosed HSDD, there is evidence for low-dose testosterone treatment (often as skin gel) can increase sexual desire and satisfaction.

This treatment is only recommended with a clear diagnosis, under medical supervision, and for a limited time. Risks such as altered blood lipids, acne, increased hair growth, and uncertainty about long-term effects mean that testosterone is not a general solution for low desire, but a specific treatment for certain women.

GIVE THE BRAIN THE RIGHT SIGNALS

Desire usually starts in the brain. Fantasies, touch, eye contact, security, laughter and the feeling of being desired are often stronger igniters than any physical stimulation.

Tips that can help:

🌸Explore slow sex – let touch and closeness take time, without pressure for orgasm.

🌸Masturbate – get to know your body and what arouses you.

🌸Communicate – dare to say what you like and need.

🌸Reduce stress – meditation, exercise or rest can work wonders for desire.

🌸Make room for imagination – eroticism can start with a book, a movie or just a thought.

THERE IS NO QUICK FIX – BUT MANY WAYS FORWARD

Sexual desire is something that can change and return. It needs nourishment, security and sometimes practical help to bloom again. We have no magic cream that automatically ignite the spark – but we have products that can remove the obstacles that keep you from even getting there. Add curiosity, self-exploration and preferably a wonderful lubricant – and you have a combination that both research and experience show can increase desire.
